Baptism

The Bible is very clear in its teachings that all Christians are expected to be baptized in water. It is equally clear that men can become saved as Christians before receiving water baptism. The key to understanding baptism is that it should not be considered as an optional extra for the Christian. It is a command that Christians are expected to obey. Jesus said:

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:19-20 NIV)

The Greek word "baptizo" means to immerse or dip under water. (Note: when the Bible was translated into English "batizo" was not translated but transliterated to the word "baptism".) Immersion best symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection.
